2007 Scion tC

When Toyota Motor Corporation founded Scion in 2003, they hit the ground running - er, driving. With a Generation Y appeal in mind, Scion was created to bring younger buyers what they wanted - an entry-level brand, ready for some serious customization. The Scion tC ("Touring Coupe") base model was introduced in the U.S. in June of 2004 as the successor to the Toyota Celica whose production ended in 2005, and the new spec model was introduced in 2007. The tC was designed to provide outstanding performance and value - and it shows. With standard features by the dozens and easy to add optional features, the tC proves to be a solid contender in the sub-compact class.

The tC comes in two different trim levels, the Base model and the new Spec model. The base model is surprisingly similar to the new spec model. Some noteworthy differences are a fixed glass panorama roof, unique upholstery and a urethane steering wheel. The Spec model was specifically designed and priced to appeal to tuners who are sure to make several modifications. For example, since wheels are usually one of the first modifications made, they are down-graded on the Spec model which substitutes steel wheels, P205/55 R16 tires and seven-spoke wheel covers over the 17-inch six-spoke alloy wheels (P215/45Z R17 all-season tires) on the Base model. The Spec model is also limited to just four exterior colors - Super White, Black Sand Pearl, Classic Silver Metallic and Flint Mica - while the base model adds on three more choices - Azure Pearl, Black Cherry Pearl and Nautical Blue Metallic.

Both trim levels are available with 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmissions, and come standard with a 2.4 liter, 160-hp, 16-valve, DOHC 4-cylinder engine. Surprisingly, this 4-cylinder engine packs a punch and pushes 160 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 163 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine boasts an aluminum cylinder block and head, a magnesium cam cover, electronic throttle control and Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). Unfortunately, the engine IS the same as the one found in the base model Toyota Camry. So while it does have some decent hustle, it isn't as fast as its predecessor (Celica). Add in the curb weight (3,000 pounds!), 4 adults and some cargo and well, you definitely won't be throwing down a 10-second quarter. In fact, you'll be spending a little more at the pump with just 23/30 MPG (5-speed manual) which is considerably less than the average subcompact.

Like all Scion models, the tC comes well-equipped. Standard features include the panorama glass power moonroof (the first in its class), air conditioning, cruise control, exterior mirrors with integrated turn signal lights, power door locks and mirrors, rear cargo cover, automatic power windows with jam protection, in-key remote keyless entry, engine immobilizer security system, auto-off headlamps, electronic hatch release and chrome-plated exhaust tip.

The exterior of the tC is for the most part nondescript, but with all of the aftermarket parts available you can definitely make this a one-of-a-kind head-turner. Classified as a subcompact, the tC is only available as a 3-door hatchback. It sits low and wide (106.3-inch wheelbase and 69.1-inch width), making its interior comfortable and roomy enough to transport 4 average-sized adults with plenty of legroom to spare. The rear seatbacks recline 45 degrees and can be adjusted into 10 different positions to maximize headroom, but it's still a little tricky for taller passengers. Who buys a coupe for backseat space anyway? The rear 60/40-split seats in this hatchback fold nearly flat on the floor, and when both front and rear passenger seats are folded flat, there is more than 8.5 feet of length for cargo. When the rear seats are upright, however, there is little space for cargo with limited room between the hatch and the floor. Not what you'd expect from a hatchback.

The view from behind the wheel is impressive. The tC's instrument panel has a unique day/night feature that reverses it's amber illumination for easier viewing. The gauges and center console have a brushed aluminum look that compliments the darker, shutter-type flush-closing dash vents. All controls are soft-touch electronic buttons and an LCD display shows outside temperature and time. Sport bucket seats are covered in premium fabric for a soft, rich feel, and the driver's seat adjusts for both height and leg support with memory function for the seat and backrest. One big advantage to the Fit's small size is its light weight. With a curb weight of less than 2500 pounds the modest power production is not nearly as noticeable.

A well-known strong point of all Scions is their high-performance audio. The tC is no exception! The tC comes standard with a 160-watt Pioneer audio system that features a centrally-located volume control knob for easy access. The mini-jack port allows drivers to plug in the portable music device and listen to their own collection through the tC's six speakers. A popular upgrade includes a Pioneer AM/FM/CD deck with iPod control where the iPod is plugged into a port and powered through the head unit and steering wheel buttons.

Overall, the Scion tC is a very good choice for an entry-level sport coupe. Although it's nowhere near a replacement for the Celica, it's great for both the low-budget driver who's looking for a lot of standard features and good performance, and the tuner who's looking for a "blank slate" on which to impress some uniqueness.
